(FRANKS..)   From JULIANA TAIWO-OBALONYE, Abuja President Muhammadu Buhari has reaffirmed his administration’s determination to give priority to the rapid improvement of power supply across the country. This was even as he regretted that power generation in the coutry had failed to keep pace with national needs over the years. He gave the assurance when he ‎had audience with officials of the Chinese Construction Company (CGGC) working on the Mambilla Power Project. He, therefore, assured that his administration would ensure that the Mambilla project and other unfinished hydro-power projects in the country were completed expeditiously to boost power supply in the country. “I am very much interested in Mambilla and other hydro-power projects, not only for the improvement of power but also for irrigation as both power and irrigation projects will help to improve the lives of Nigerians”. “I am going to ask for details of the Mambilla Hydro-P...

Indonesia transport plane crash: More than 100 feared dead

(FRANKS..)   More than 100 people are feared dead after a military transport plane crashed in a residential area of the Indonesian city of Medan. The Hercules C-130 plane hit two houses and a hotel before bursting into flames creating a huge fireball. Air Force head Agus Supriatna visited the crash site and told the AFP news agency that there were no survivors among the 113 people on board. Around 50 bodies have been taken to hospital - others are being recovered. A major rescue operation is under way at the site which was covered in flames and thick black smoke. The BBC's Alice Budisatrijo in Jakarta says that only the tail of the aircraft is still recognisable; the rest has been reduced to debris. Our correspondent says that there are reports that people are trapped inside wrecked buildings and the nearest hospital is continuing to receive bodies arriving from the crash site. Iran nuclear talks: Zarif returns to Vienna on deadline day

(FRANKS..)   Iran's foreign minister has returned to Vienna for talks with world powers on the day set as a deadline for an agreement on its nuclear programme. Mohammad Javad Zarif is accompanied by the head of Iran's atomic energy agency and President Hassan Rouhani's brother. All parties to the talks say they do not expect to reach a deal by the time the self-imposed deadline expires. They stress that much has already been achieved, but a BBC correspondent says success remains far from certain. The so-called P5+1 - the US, UK, France, China and Russia plus Germany - want Iran to scale back its sensitive nuclear activities to ensure that it cannot build a nuclear weapon. Iran, which wants international sanctions lifted in exchange, insists that its nuclear work is peaceful. 'Bottom lines' Iranian officials said a plane carrying Mr Zarif, Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran (AEOI) chief Ali Akbar Salehi and Hossein Fereidoun, President Rouhani...

My 25 years as a prostitute

(FRANKS..)   Brenda Myers-Powell was just a child when she became a prostitute in the early 1970s. Here she describes how she was pulled into working on the streets and why, three decades later, she devoted her life to making sure other girls don't fall into the same trap. Some people will find Brenda's account upsetting. Right from the start life was handing me lemons, but I've always tried to make the best lemonade I can. I grew up in the 1960s on the West Side of Chicago. My mother died when I was six months old. She was only 16 and I never learned what it was that she died from - my grandmother, who drank more than most, couldn't tell me later on. The official explanation is that it was "natural causes". I don't believe that. Who dies at 16 from natural causes? I like to think that God was just ready for her. I heard stories that she was beautiful and had a great sense of humour. I know that's true because I have one also. It ...

"The leading cause of death for the Black African and Asian/Indian population groups was tuberculosis , while ischaemic heart diseases were the leading cause for the White population, and the human immunodeficiency virus disease for the Coloured population group." New Ebola case marks disease's return to Liberia

(FRANKS..) The body of a dead Liberian man has tested positive for Ebola - the country's first reported case since it was declared free of the disease. Deputy health minister Tolbert Nyenswah said tests confirmed that the 17-year-old man, from a town near the main airport, had died of the disease. Officials are investigating how he contracted Ebola, Mr Nyenswah said. Liberia was declared free of Ebola six weeks ago, following the deadliest outbreak in the disease's history. More than 11,000 people have died of the disease since December 2013, the vast majority of them in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone. The countries had largely curbed the spread of the disease - but the number of new cases has risen recently, with the start of the rainy season in West Africa. Analysis: BBC News website Health editor Michelle Roberts The news that a 17-year-old man has died of Ebola in Liberia is deeply troubling. The country was thought to be free of the deadly virus...

Nigeria tightens controls on foreign exchange

(FRANKS..) The Nigerian central bank has imposed new foreign exchange controls to try to stem the flow of dollars out of the country. It means importers will not be able to get hard currency to buy a list of 40 items ranging from rice to cement. The list includes Indian incense, plastic and rubber products, soap and even private jets. It has also restricted access to the interbank currency market for the purchase of foreign currency bonds. In April, the central bank limited the amount that Nigerians could spend on credit cards abroad. The Nigerian currency, the naira, has plunged because of the fall in the oil price. The central bank has spent $3.4bn propping it up since it fixed the exchange rate in February and tightened trading rules to curb speculation. Black market "We see this policy move as confirmation that foreign exchange supply remains extremely tight. But more worryingly, it suggests that the central bank remains reluctant to devalue the naira,...

Greece debt talks: Crisis deepens amid deadlock

(FRANKS..) Eurozone finance ministers are meeting in a desperate bid to find a solution to the Greece debt crisis amid deadlock between Athens and its creditors. Earlier talks between Greece's Prime Minister, Alexis Tsipras, and the country's international lenders ended without agreement. Ahead of the Eurogroup meeting, the German finance minister warned that the gap between the two sides was widening. Greece must repay a €1.6bn (£1.1bn) IMF loan by next Tuesday or face default. That could lead to Greece exiting the eurozone, with possible repercussions for the rest of Europe and the world economy. Only once agreement is reached will the European Commission, the European Central Bank (ECB) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) unlock the final €7.2bn tranche of bailout funds for cash-strapped Greece. The crisis threatens to overshadow a summit of EU leaders opening on Thursday afternoon. Sticking to proposals The Greek government has criticised the interna...

Why China is mirroring Western education

(FRANKS..) On the outskirts of a busy port city lies a university campus that looks a lot like a scene from the British Midlands. Students in hoodies and headphones wearing thick, rectangle-rimmed glasses discuss ‘critical thinking’ and on sunny days sit crossed-legged on the grass by a lake as construction dust blows in the wind. Foreign institutions are falling over themselves to set up partnerships with Chinese universities But some of these students have never liked a Facebook message or sent a friend request. They send tweets on Weibo not Twitter and upload photos on Weixin not Instagram. Welcome to Ningbo in China, Northern Zhenjiang province, five thousand miles away from the UK. Every international business in the world, from textiles to technology, is trying to access the Chinese market. The education business is no different. Ningbo is famous for its entrepreneurs and foreign investment. For the last 10 years it has also been home to Nottingham Ningbo (...

APC crisis: Buhari launches rescue mission

(FRANKS..) By WILLY EYA President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday initiated a rescue mission for  the All Progressives Congress (APC), with a meeting aimed at dousing tension and saving the party from further crisis. The APC has been embroiled in crisis following the emergence of Senator Bukola Saraki and Yakubu Dogara as Senate president and speaker of the House of Representatives respectively, against the party’s wish. The APC leadership had endorsed Senator Ahmad Lawan and Femi Gbajabiamila as preferred candidates for Senate president and speaker of the House of Representatives, ahead of the National Assembly inauguration on Tuesday, June 9, 2015, which could not materialise. Shortly after returning from South Africa, where he attended the Africa Union (AU) summit, Buhari met behind closed-doors, at his Aso Drive residence, with former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, alongside some leaders of the APC, including embattled National Chairman, Chief John Odigie...

N15bn fraud: Nyako fails to stop EFCC, DSS, police from arresting him

(FRANKS..)   From GODWIN TSA, Abuja Attempts by former governor of Adamawa State, Admiral Murtala Nyako (retd), to stop the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission [EFCC], the Department of State Service [DSS] and the Inspector General of Police [IGP] from arresting him over alleged N15 billion fraud failed yesterday as a Federal High Court judge, Justice Ahmed Mohammed refused his ex-parte application. Rather, the judge gave Nyako’s counsel, E. O. Ogungbeje seven days to serve all the respondents with the originating summons and adjourned the case to July 1, 2015. Justice Mohammed declined Nyako’s request on the grounds that the facts and developments contained in his motion ex-parte took place last year. The former Chief of Naval Staff, who returned from self-exile on Saturday, May 30, 2015, reported at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja where he was detained and quizzed for over 10 hours. The former governor had approached the court via an ex-parte applicat...

Jeb Bush launches 'optimistic' campaign for president

(FRANKS..)   Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush has officially launched his US presidential campaign, promising to "run with heart" and "take nothing and no one for granted". Mr Bush, the son and brother of two former presidents, spoke in his hometown of Miami, Florida. Recently released campaign branding leaves behind his surname, which some see as a political liability. Polling suggests he has yet to dominate a wide field of Republican candidates. Speaking in both English and Spanish, Mr Bush used his speech to appeal to a broad swath of the US electorate - of which minorities have become increasingly more important - not just the Republican's conservative base. "In any language," Mr Bush said, "my message will be an optimistic one because I am certain that we can make the decades just ahead in America the greatest time ever to be alive in this world." Much of Mr Bush's remarks were dedicated to his record as the former...
