From Bamigbola Gbolagunte, Akure
The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) chapter of
the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has expressed worry on
the high level of insecurity in the country, saying its members are now
the targets of killers.
Specifically, the union bemoaned the rate at which its members were being killed and kidnapped across the country.
Also, the union condemned the gruesome murder of the former vice chancellor of the university, Prof. Albert Ilemobade, who was killed by two of his domestic staff at his home in Ijapo, Akure on June 21 as well as the assassination of Dr. Deji Adejobi of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Osun State.
Meanwhile, the family of Prof. Ilemobade has released final burial arrangements for the late FUTA VC.
The funeral arrangements, according to the family, would commence with the lying-in-state at his residence along Gani Fawehinmi Street, off
Ademulegun Road, Ondo on July 29, while Christian wake holds at Oba Adesanoye Civic Centre the same day.
The funeral service and interment takes place at All Saints’ Anglican Church, Ogbonkowo area, Ondo on July 30, while the thanksgiving service also holds at the same church on August 2.
Addressing journalists in Akure yesterday, the Chairman of the union, Dr. Bola Oniya, called on the government at all levels to find drastic solution to insecurity in the country.
He lamented: “We feel threatened by the state of insecurity in this country, we don’t know why we are now the targets. Last month, our former vice chancellor, Prof. Ilemobade, was murdered and yesterday again, some gunmen killed Dr. Adejobi of OAU, Ile Ife. We don’t know why the university lecturers are now the targets. Our government has to do something about this, we are no longer safe.”
On the murder of Ilemobade, the ASUU chairman appealed to the Ondo State Police Command to go deeper in their investigation, saying there might be more facts to the gruesome murder of the former vice chancellor.
He noted that the two suspects, who plotted and executed the killing of the university lecturer, could not kill their employer just to steal his car.
His words: “The cruel nature of his murder calls to question yet again the incessant attacks on the nation’s intelligentsia. The union is following developments with keen interest and hopes that thorough investigations are carried out by the state police department to unravel every detail that led to the brutal death of our former vice Chancellor.”
